Take Action NOW to Support Part Time Members!

Our chapter is organizing for improved conditions for our part time members. A huge amount of teaching at this college is conducted by adjuncts, and we have a large number of faculty and professionals on part time lines.  They are our most vulnerable members. We will be developing demands from the administration that they stop the exploitation of contingent labor, and treat these employees with the respect that they deserve.  Stand up for our fellow UUP members and help make a better workplace for them a reality!

To start, we are demanding that the administration eliminate the use of temporary appointments.  The SUNY Board of Trustees is clear on the appropriateness of its use.  If you do not know, a temp appointment offers no job security at all. Members can be told today is their last day. With a term appointment, a part time member will receive at least a 45-day notice of non-renewal of their contract.  Even that is ridiculously low, so it’s the least the administration can do for a large set of their employees.   Don’t you agree?

We have drafted a petition to present at next month’s LM Meeting.  We need hundreds of signatures—so please sign NOW:

Thank you and in solidarity,

Global Cultural Diversity & Inclusion: Communicating Effectively in a World of Difference

NYS/UUP JLMC is hosting a Global Cultural Diversity & Inclusion Workshop on Friday, March 25th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm virtually via Zoom. The application deadline is Monday, March 14.

Workshop Description In this survey-level workshop, participants will develop a practical understanding of the complexity of effective communication in organizational settings where they need to work every day with colleagues, students, and other stakeholders who are culturally diverse and come from various international backgrounds and all walks of life. Participants will learn about the differences and similarities in key national cultural systems represented in our increasingly global workplace. They will acquire skills in effective communication including attentive listening, effective messaging, empathy, and ways to identify the meaning and intention of verbal and non-verbal communication with the purpose of creating a meaningful sense of inclusion in the workplace. The participants will engage in several interactive critical incident analysis sessions in which they can explore and evaluate their own communication styles and take appropriate action for a meaningful intervention. They will also work on an action plan for ongoing refinement of their global communication skills and for sustaining an inclusive productive relationship with key stakeholders.

Send the completed Workshop Application to nysuuplmc@goer.ny.gov.

Remember to complete UUP’s Contract Negotiations Member Survey

What do you want to see in the next UUP contract? How should UUP approach its negotiations over compensation, health benefits, telecommuting, contingent faculty concerns, hospital issues, and more?

Please take a few minutes out of your busy schedule to complete UUP’s Contract Negotiations Member Survey.  When we go to the table, we want to make sure that we are bargaining on behalf of the pressing needs of our members. We also want to be able to emphasize to the State that we have an active, engaged membership—a membership that is paying attention to negotiations and needs to see specific, material improvements in our working conditions.

Completing the survey doesn’t take long and it will give us leverage at the table. We’ll be closing the survey on 12/17 so that we can begin to prepare our contract proposals. Once you have completed the survey, please take a minute to remind your colleagues and co-workers to do the same. As always, we’re stronger together.

Welcome to Our New Home on the Web

The Empire State College UUP Chapter website has moved! Formerly hosted by Google Sites, we are now hosted by UUP, using WordPress. Our look and feel has changed, but we’ve kept the site’s organization, including the pages just for academics, professionals, part-timers and new employees.
