Your 2022 Voter Guide! From NYSUT

Take action!   Take action!  This November, we can rally around the powerful idea that public schools unite us. We can VOTE for candidates that are pro-education and pro-labor — that will support educators, help our students, protect our rights, and advance democracy.

The hardships from the past few years have deeply affected us all and remind us just how important our public schools, universities and hospitals are. NYSUT’s 2022 Voter Guide is built on our commitment to endorsing candidates up and down the ballot who will fight for the issues that matter to NYSUT members and allies — like funding for public schools, colleges and hospitals; safe schools for all; repealing receivership; tier equity; and so much more.

Click through to read NYSUT’s 2022 Voter Guide online or to download a PDF copy to read offline.

If you’ve already voted, THANK YOU! If not, please consider the endorsements in our 2022 Voter Guide as you finalize your plan to vote.
In solidarity,
Andrew Pallotta, NYSUT President

As you may know, our Outreach Committee will be hosting two virtual town hall meetings to gather input as part of the development of our 2023 Legislative Agenda. The first one will be held this Friday (10/21) at noon, with a second being held next Tuesday (10/25) at 6 pm.

Please click the link below to register:

If you are unable to attend either of these meetings you can submit ideas for UUP’s Legislative Agenda through our online portal here: https://bit.ly/3rmOzWp

We had many successes last year due to the hard work of our members. And we have even greater opportunities to move our institutions forward if we work together. I encourage you to be active, participate in our advocacy efforts, and add your voice in advocating for our union and our common interests. Your ideas and suggestions are critical for us to create a comprehensive agenda that will gather political support across New York.

Retention Bonuses for Health Care Workers

We have just gotten word that the Division of Budget has released Budget Bulletin D-1200,  Budget Bulletin D-1200 (ny.gov), which contains directions to state agencies concerning  how the health care retention bonuses will be paid to state employees. This covers SUNY employees who are performing qualifying service, in qualifying titles, who will be eligible for these bonuses. We are presently studying the documents to get as clear a picture as possible as to who is included.

Having said that, those working in qualifying service in qualifying titles at the SUNY hospitals, at the UB dental school, at Optometry, and in student health clinics at all SUNY campuses will be eligible.  Individual employees will not be required to apply for or submit any individual documentation to qualify, SUNY management will be responsible for identifying all employees who qualify.

This is a big win for our members and is the result of lots of hard work in advocacy with the governor’s office. Stay tuned for more information.

UUP/IDA Awards 2022-2023

New York State/United University Professions Joint Labor-Management Committee Individual Development Awards (IDA)

IDA awards are one way in which full or part-time employees can support their professional development/activities. Any member of the bargaining unit (faculty and professional employees) can apply.

We have not yet received our allocation for 2022-2023, but we know, contractually, that these awards will be available.

Because the UUP contract expired on 01 July, the program has been given a nine- month extension. Thus, our allocation will cover the period 01 July to 31 March. We expect to receive the precise number early in the fall.

We have divided the year into two cycles. Cycle #1 includes activities between 01 July and 14 November. Applications for funding of activities during that period are due by 01 November.

Cycle #2 includes activities between 15 November and 31 March. Applications for funding of activities during that period are due by 18 March.

After our committee reviews applications, we forward our recommendations to the Governor’s Office of Employee Relations (GOER) for final approval. Once applications are approved by GOER, applicants will receive email notification.

As per the guidelines provided by the UUP IDA Joint Labor-Management Committee website, proposed projects/activities, which support professional development, can include:

  • Basic, applied, or historical research
  • Curriculum or instructional material development
  • Workshop, seminar internship or course work not covered by the Tuition Assistance program or SUNY tuition waiver
  • Conference participation or attendance
  • Preparation of material for publication
  • Grant Proposal development
  • Artistic or creative endeavors
  • Other work-related professional/scholarly development projects or activities

Members of the chapter can apply for up to $1000/academic year for one project.

The exact dollar amount awarded will be determined based on the number of applications received. Please make sure that your application includes a detailed budget to be considered.

Please also note that IDA funds can be used to supplement funding already received through the SUNY Empire Faculty Development Fund or Professional Development Fund.

All applications will be reviewed soon after the application deadline date by the committee that has been appointed by both labor and management: John Beckem (co-chair), Alan Mandell (co-chair), Carl Burkart, Sherri Newell, Veronica O’Geen, and Brian Carolan. Stacey Turner supports the committee’s work.

All applications must be signed by the applicant and should be emailed to Stacey Turner (stacey.turner@esc.edu) (Note: The application does not require a dean/associate dean’s signature.)
