Brooklyn Needs Downstate: Experts Discuss the Consequences of Closing SUNY Downstate Hospital, Brooklyn’s Public Teaching Hospital

Dear Colleagues,

Please see the following information from Statewide President,  Fred Kowal with regards to the crisis we face at SUNY Downstate Hospital:

Dear Colleagues:

Please join us for a crucial discussion on the far-reaching implications that SUNY’s closure plan for SUNY Downstate Hospital will have on healthcare services, community-wellbeing, and medical education. UUP will host three virtual panels on three different dates, to delve into the short-term and long-term consequences of the closure plan, exploring the immediate challenges posed by the disruption of healthcare services and the potential decline in medical education and research. The conversation will also consider the public health perspective, emphasizing the broader implications for healthcare access and disparities in services.

Join us for the one-hour panel discussions at noon on March 15th or 19th; or on March 20th at 5 PM. Registration can be found below.

Key Questions to Be Addressed:

•             What immediate challenges arise with the disruption of healthcare services caused by the closure?

•  In the long term, how might the closure hinder the development of a diverse healthcare workforce and affect medical research and innovation?

•  What public health risks might emerge without SUNY Downstate Hospital?

•  How can policymakers ensure that the decision-making process prioritizes the critical role of public teaching hospitals in our healthcare system?

Register today for any (or all) of the planned panel discussions to learn more:    Dates/Times: March 15 @ Noon; March 19 @ Noon; or March 20 @ 5 PM
