What Is a Department Rep?
Department Reps are union members who volunteer to serve as a liaison between their workplace and chapter leadership.
The goal is to build union power by strengthening relationships between members and chapter leadership through personal connections and increased UUP visibility on campus.
- Enhancing chapter communication around important issues. Reps facilitate two-way communication between members and chapter leaders. Chapter leaders can stay better informed of worksite-specific issues and keep members informed of chapter events, actions and initiatives.
- Increasing visibility, solidarity and advocacy. The personal connection between Reps and members allows chapter leaders to rely on solidarity in support of issues that affect our workplace, and to increase participation in political or advocacy events.
- Driving membership recruitment and activation. Department Representatives know their workplaces and colleagues. They are best able take the lead on having conversations with non-members and asking them to stand together as UUP members, and to encourage existing members to become more active in their union.
Will You Join Our Rep Program?
We invite you to become a Department Representative. Even if your Department is already has one or more reps, you can become a member of the team.
Basic Roles and Responsibilities include:
- Obtain from the chapter an accurate list of members and non-members in your department.
- Meet with your department members and introduce yourself as their rep.
- Establish/maintain a UUP bulletin board in your area.
- Forward complaints, concerns and perceptions of your members to appropriate chapter leaders.
- Contact non-members and ask them to join.
- Become generally familiar with the UUP contract and refer questions to chapter officers and our Labor Relations Specialist for assistance with problems relating to enforcement.
- Become familiar with the basic structure and goals of UUP.
- Learn about and urge your members to attend union meetings, events, affiliate conventions, contract votes, workshops, etc.
- Attend Department Rep meetings (usually 2 times per semester).
