Member Input Requested

Dear Colleagues,

Recently the Chapter has been made aware of Member concerns involving On-Call and Start Dates vs. Hire Dates.

  1. On Call – Under section 20.19 of the Contract Agreement employees can be on call, but that designation needs to come from the President. If you are on call, you are directed that you MUST be available. Your UUP Buffalo Center Chapter has confirmed that the university President has no such list identifying any UUP member as being on call.

The Chapter does recognize that there are some department’s where MOU’s have been established. In these cases, employees make efforts to respond, if possible, because there is a need to respond at off hours. If the employee is able to and does respond, they may have to report and should be compensated accordingly.  We are looking for any directives from supervisors (in a performance program or otherwise documented by your supervisor) indicating you are designated on call and MUST report when contacted. If your supervisor is treating your position as on call, through a performance program or otherwise, in a way that which requires you be available and report, please contact the UUP Buffalo Center Chapter Office: buffalocenter@uupmail.org
  2. Start Date vs. Hire Date – We are also interested in Members who have been asked to report to work PRIOR to their Start Date identified in their hire letter. The Chapter does recognize that Members may have “voluntarily” reported to work prior to their start date in order complete various preparations for their positions prior to their start date. However, if your supervisor has insisted that you report to work prior to your start date, please contact the UUP Buffalo Center Chapter Office: buffalocenter@uupmail.org

    In Solidarity,

    Ken Kern
    Chapter President
