Statement & FAQ’s on Returning to Campus

Dear Colleagues,

As the university prepares to return to near capacity operations for the fall semester, members who have been working remotely will need to prepare to return to their campus work locations.

The information being presented here is based on information we are aware of at this time. Due to the ever changing face of the COVID crisis, updates continue to be made on a daily basis. The Buffalo Center Chapter will continue to update the membership on various related issues.

If directed, will I be required to return to work on campus?

Yes – The current telecommuting agreement is set to expire July 2nd. While we do not anticipate any further extensions, one never knows. Past agreements were extended at the last minute. UUP Central is advocating for childcare issues as a possible exception (due to the various summer camps being closed), as well as medical and eldercare issues. The telecommuting agreement does not guarantee a member’s right to work remotely. Supervisors have always had the right to call back members to work on campus at any time.

According to Mark Coldren, Associate Vice President for Human Resources at UB, the opportunity to arrange for an alternative work schedule (including the possibility of continuing to work remotely), has always been an option for employees at UB. Arrangements need to be made individually between the employee and their immediate supervisor.

Based on this, the UUP Buffalo Center is recommending and encouraging that members start a conversation with their immediate supervisor regarding their specific circumstances, and the directive to report to campus.

Members who feel they need an ADA consideration for returning to campus should contact the Department of Accessibility Resources at 645-3116.

Do I need to report to work if I have not been vaccinated?

Yes – any direction from your immediate supervisor does not depend on whether or not you are vaccinated.

Do I need to continue to complete a “work log” if I am working on campus?

No –UUP professionals work under the concept of “professional obligation”. The purpose of requesting a work log was specific to working remotely as part of the Telecommuting Agreement. The requested logs are used to verify work completed if there was an audit of state funds related to staff salaries.

Can my schedule or my work assignment be changed when returning to campus?

No – Work schedules and assignments should be the same as they were Pre-COVID.

As of a Governor’s order on May 15, offices may return to 75% of maximum capacity.

As a reminder, here’s what you can do to stay safe while on campus – continue to follow the CDC guidelines including: wearing masks, social distancing, washing hands frequently, and getting vaccinated.
