Contract ratification ballots in the mail

Date posted: August 7, 2018

The day that UUP members have been waiting for is at hand – they are about to vote on the union’s tentative contract with the state.

Members will soon receive contract ballots at their home addresses. The ballots were mailed Friday, Aug. 3, so they should begin arriving the week of Aug. 5.

The ballots will arrive in a business-sized white envelope from the American Arbitration Association, and each envelope will also contain a postage-paid return envelope addressed to the AAA. Please mail your ballot in this return envelope back to the AAA, not to UUP.

The American Arbitration Association, which is distributing and will count ballots, must receive ballots by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4. The ballots will be counted Sept. 5.

If you are a UUP member as of May 23, 2018, you are eligible to vote; May 23 is the date that both sides signed the tentative agreement.

If you believe that you are eligible to receive a ballot and vote on the contract, but you have not received a ballot in the mail at your home address, please call the American Arbitration Association at 1-800-529-5218 to request a duplicate ballot.

An empowering message

“Your vote on a tentative contract agreement is the final step in this democratic process, and very possibly the most important and empowering action you will take as a UUP member,” UUP President Fred Kowal said. “All that I ask as you vote is that you be assured that neither the Negotiations Team nor I would have ever presented this tentative agreement to the membership if we did not truly believe it is a very solid, strong and comprehensive agreement that will stand the test of time.”

Highlights of the tentative agreement include:

      • 2 percent salary increases each year of the contract, retroactive to July 2016;
      • Inclusion of the state’s Family Paid Leave provision in UUP’s contract—making it New York’s first public-sector union to negotiate the policy;
      • Beginning in 2019, a minimum starting salary for part-time academics for each three-credit course they teach. This is the first time that UUP has been successful in negotiating a minimum salary for part-time academics on SUNY’s state-operated campuses;
      • A new compensation provision that establishes on-base funds, allowing UUP to address salary compression and inequity at campuses statewide;
      • The reestablishment of on-base discretionary salary income (DSI) increases;
      • Provisions to address hospital needs regarding on-call and holiday pay—which will positively impact UUP professionals at all campuses;
      • Access to a yearly grant to help members pay for their child’s education at a SUNY state-operated campuses.

A copy of the tentative agreement and other detailed information is available on UUP’s Contract Negotiations web page.

Since the May 23 signing of the tentative agreement, UUP officers and Negotiations Team members have visited every chapter to meet with members. Officers and Team members have remained on call to answer any additional questions about the agreement, or to speak with members who were unable to attend their campus meeting.

Officers will continue to be available for final questions during the voting process.

“These are very tough times for unions,” Kowal said. “But UUP stood firm even as other public-sector unions reached settlements, because we negotiate only for our members – we would never let outside pressures dictate such an important decision. I can proudly stand behind this proposal, and I hope that all of you will, too.”

Membership Card Update

Date posted: June 25, 2018

Greetings UUP Cortland members!

In response to the anticipated ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court case, Janus v. AFSCME, New York State has amended the Taylor Law which governs labor relations within the state.

These changes mandate that public employee unions will no longer be compelled to represent non-members in disciplinary cases, and that UUP is allowed to only offer members benefits that are above and beyond their negotiated benefits.

To ensure that all UUPers are aware of and eligible for these protections and benefits, all members are asked to complete and return the Updated Membership Form. This form can be found on the UUP website
https://uuphost.org/myuup/Membership/RegForm.php or by contacting the UUP Cortland chapter office for a copy.

To get your copy of the updated membership card, or if you have any questions, please contact our chapter office at x5991 or mail to uup@cortland.edu

In solidarity!
Joe Westbrook, UUP Chapter President

SUNY Cortland Works! Monday, May 7, 2018

Take another small action to help UUP secure a fair contract!

During our Day of Action on March 1st, our chapter began collecting “postcards” to send to Chancellor Johnson, demanding that SUNY respect UUP. In mid April, UUP statewide leaders will deliver to SUNY Administration many thousands of postcards collected from campuses across the state.

Hundreds of you signed these outsized postcards on March 1st, our day of action. Anyone who supports our union can still sign a card: your family members, friends, neighbors, students . . . SUNY needs to hear from taxpayers and other New York residents who believe that the members of our union deserve a fair contract. We contribute a lot to our community’s economy and well being. Now we’re asking our allies to acknowledge their support for our union’s reasonable contract proposals.

Postcards are available from your area activist or from the chapter office in Moffett B-05. The chapter office is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you can’t get over to the office in that timeframe, let us know and we’ll deliver cards to you.

Postcards should be returned to the chapter office by 4 p.m. on Friday, April 6th.  If no one is present in the office when you stop by, you may push the cards under the door.

Day of Action THANK YOU

UUP Cortland chapter leaders thank our wonderful members who answered the call to action Thursday, March 1. At every campus across the state, UUP members urged SUNY to agree to a fair contract, and Cortland members played their part in getting that message across. Check out the Twitter postings and the news story at

 http://uupinfo.org/communications/uupdate/2018/180301.php.

At both entrances to the campus, morning, noon, and late afternoon demonstrations drew attention and positive responses from passerby on foot and in vehicles. Dozens of handmade signs created by our members on Tuesday during the Union Matters meeting gave voice to our grassroots demand that SUNY treat us with respect and give us a contract now.  Professional staff, faculty, and students took a moment out of their busy day to contribute their names to hundreds of individually signed postcards that have been taken to Albany for delivery to SUNY Administration.  Media coverage included local newspapers, television, and radio.

Our members ROCK! We want to hear your story about the Day of Action. Please reply to our message with a sentence that we can print in our next newsletter issue.

Working People’s Day of Action

Date posted:

Join UUP in New York City on Saturday, Feb. 24 to show our solidarity and stand up against Janus v. AFSCME, a case that threatens our ability to come together as a strong union. Book a roundtrip seat on a union bus from Syracuse.

The Working People’s Day of Action rally is an urgent call for change and occurs only two days before the U.S. Supreme Court will hear Janus. The corporate CEOs and wealthy special interest groups that filed this case are deliberately trying to tilt the power away from the working class. It’s up to us to fight back!

Please register using this link and spread the word on your campus to join us at the Working People’s Day of Action on Feb. 24 at Foley Square, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.:  https://goo.gl/forms/1IuxxpCmE48Cxur52

Travel expenses will not be reimbursed for this event, but seats for UUP members on CSEA buses from our area are still available. There are 20 seats left! CSEA will run roundtrip buses to NYC, with pickup details to be announced. There will be NO COST for union members to participate. The bus will leave from the CSEA Region 5 office: 6595 Kirkville Rd, East Syracuse. We plan to depart at 5 a.m. and return in the evening.

To reserve your spot on the CSEA bus, please RSVP with CSEA Region Political Coordinator Josh Schick at (315) 433-0050.
