To be eligible to join UUP, you must be an employee of the State University of New York and belong to the Professional Services Negotiation Unit (PSNU, also called the 08 Bargaining Unit). This includes academic faculty and professionals in a variety of important campus roles encompassing over 800 job titles statewide.
Under New York State Labor Law, UUP represents all members of the bargaining unit, including both those who join UUP and those who remain non-members. The equivalent of member dues will be withdrawn from your paycheck even if you do not join UUP. Thus, it costs you no more to become a member than it does to be a non-member.
Membership in UUP gives you the right to vote on the contract. It also gives you the opportunity to choose the union leaders on your campus, and to choose your union representatives at the state and national levels. Only members can maintain membership after retirement and become eligible for retiree benefit programs.
Once you join UUP, you also become an affiliate member of New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT, affiliate of AFL-CIO). Membership in these affiliates gives you access to a number of additional benefits and privileges, and unites you with others involved in education across the state and nation.
To become a member of UUP, request an application form from the Chapter Office uup@fredonia.edu, or download the form online from the UUP website (see below). You may mail your membership form directly to UUP in Albany, or send it to the Chapter Office (Thompson W234) and we will mail it to Albany for you.
If you have questions about membership or want further information before you decide, please contact Daniel Smith, Fredonia Chapter Membership Development Officer – Daniel.Smith@fredonia.edu.
