UUP goes nationwide in new documentary

UUP’s story will soon have a national audience.

And a celebrity to go with it.

In America, a national production company that specializes in short-form productions for public and commercial television, worked with UUP over the last seven months to script and shoot a program that showcases the union’s history, achievements and vision for the future.

There are three versions of the production: a one-minute commercial ad, a five-minute educational documentary for public TV—hosted by Tony and Golden Globe-winning actor James Earl Jones—and a longer six-minute UUP profile that can be viewed on UUP’s website. Click on the photo above to watch the full-length profile.

The one-minute commercial will air nationally on Fox Business News on Nov. 19 or 20; the airdate and time are still tentative. That broadcast will reach more than 86 million homes nationwide.

Between Nov. 16 and Nov. 30, viewers across the country can see the one-minute spot during prime time (6 p.m.-11:45 p.m.) on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, CNBC, Family Channel, TLC, Discovery Channel and other popular cable outlets.

The ad will air in more than 60 television markets, including Philadelphia, Dallas, Boston, San Francisco/Oakland, Houston, Detroit and Miami. The ad will also be broadcast in Atlanta, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Memphis, New Orleans, San Diego, St. Louis and even tiny Rapid City, S.D.; Albany is the only New York area where the ad will air.

Starting Nov. 23, the five-minute educational documentary will begin airing on on PBS stations across the country. The program will be broadcast on nearly 200 PBS stations; it will air throughout 2015 and 2016. The version with Jones can only be seen on PBS stations.

“UUP is the largest higher education union in America and it’s time for America to see and share in the incredible work that we do for our students, for SUNY, for the American labor movement and for our members,” said UUP President Fred Kowal, above, center.

The productions feature interviews with Kowal, statewide VP for Professionals Philippe Abraham, Cheryl Hamilton, director of the Education Opportunity Program at Stony Brook University; and Lynda Perdomo-Ayala, administrator in the department of pharmacological sciences in Stony Brook’s School of Medicine.

A film crew shot the day-long production at Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Health Science Center in June. Photos of several SUNY campuses also appear in the segments, including Oswego State, SUNY Downstate Medical Center, Upstate Medical University and SUNY Canton.

“This is incredibly exciting for UUP,” Kowal said. “The good work that we do for SUNY students, SUNY and our members will be shared with a national audience.”

Campus Equity Week (10/26-10/30)

Dear Colleagues:

As UUP moves to make adjunct issues a primary focus, it’s important that all chapters support Campus Equity Week. Campus Equity Week begins on Monday, Oct. 26 and runs through Friday, Oct. 30.

UUP is a strong supporter of Campus Equity Week, a national week of action to bring greater awareness to the precarious situation for contingent faculty in higher education. Adjuncts now make up the majority of college instructors, yet they are working on temporary, low-paid contracts and many times are subjected to exploitative employment conditions.

UUP chapters in Albany, Cortland, Fredonia, New Paltz, Oneonta, Oswego and Plattsburgh are among the chapters taking part in Campus Equity Week. They will be hosting CEW activities such as informational tables, petition drives and community forums.

Over the past 15 years, UUP has won victories for its members who are adjuncts. Now it is important that we support their efforts and attend Campus Equity Week events on your campuses.

In Solidarity,
Fred

Campus Equity Week: Coming to a campus near you

Read UUP’s Position Statement on Contingent Employment

Thousands of academic and professional contingent employees across the nation have no job security and work for meager wages.

To support contingents in their struggle, UUP is once again sponsoring Campus Equity Week, a national week of action focusing on unfair working conditions for contingent employees. Other sponsors include the NEA, SEIU and New Faculty Majority.

Across the state, UUP chapters will be hosting CEW activities such as informational tables, petition drives and community forums. Cortland, New Paltz, Oswego and Plattsburgh are among the chapters taking part in CEW events. Please contact specific chapters for more information.

UUP’s Executive Board adopted a union position statement on contingent employment in July. You can read that statement here.

2015 Discretionary Recommendation

Please see the attached letter that was sent to Dr. Terenzio related to the upcoming contractual discretionary bonus.

Aug282015discretionaryrecommendation

The UUP contract in Article 20.11 states in part, “…an amount equal to one-half percent of …basic annual salaries…for distribution…shall occur not later than December 31, 2015.” The chapter Executive Board and Department Representatives voted unanimously to recommend to the President that this bonus be distributed across-the-board. The monetary increases the union was able to get in hard-fought and unfriendly negotiations were, to many members, not adequate for the hard work we do for SUNY and the state. This, in addition to other demands for givebacks and two unpaid furlough days has left the workforce with a distinct feeling of being underappreciated. The across-the-board recommendation was made in the spirit of maintaining and enhancing morale. One officer on the Executive Board recently stated that the recent discretionary distribution systems seem to serve as disincentives. Your chapter officers and representatives welcome your feedback and comments.

Sincerely,

Bill Tusang,
Chapter President
