UUP mourns the loss of former Utica/Rome UUP chapter president Eugene Newman, 64, who died Dec. 28 in Bassett Health Care Center, Cooperstown. Newman, a professor of telecommunications at SUNY Institute of Technology in Utica, was an active union member, serving several years as a chapter president and union delegate. “Gene enjoyed the ‘sweet’ life,” said UUP Acting President Frederick Floss, noting Newman’s love for cookies, pastry, candy and other sugary treats. “He will be missed.”

His colleagues remember Newman for his dedication to enriching his students’ lives, and noted that he also taught in Australia, France and California. Newman was a member of the statewide Wireless Advisory Council, and he enjoyed silversmithing, poetry and snorkeling. Born Aug. 16, 1943, in Paterson, N.J., Newman earned a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University, a master’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Memorial contributions may be sent to: The Nature Conservancy, New York City Office, 322 Eighth Ave., 16th Floor, New York, N.Y. 10001, or to the Bob Simon Fund, Cancer Center & Imogene Bassett Hospital, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.
