UUP mourns the loss of former Utica/Rome UUP chapter president Eugene Newman, 64, who died Dec. 28 in Bassett Health Care Center, Cooperstown. Newman, a professor of telecommunications at SUNY Institute of Technology in Utica, was an active union member, serving several years as a chapter president and union delegate. “Gene enjoyed the ‘sweet’ life,†said UUP Acting President Frederick Floss, noting Newman’s love for cookies, pastry, candy and other sugary treats. “He will be missed.â€
His colleagues remember Newman for his dedication to enriching his students’ lives, and noted that he also taught in Australia, France and California. Newman was a member of the statewide Wireless Advisory Council, and he enjoyed silversmithing, poetry and snorkeling. Born Aug. 16, 1943, in Paterson, N.J., Newman earned a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University, a master’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
