A UUP member from the University at Buffalo was recently honored by President Barack Obama during a White House ceremony. The president presented Esther Sans Takeuchi with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the highest honor given nationally for technological achievement. Takeuchi invented tiny batteries that power pacemakers and implantable devices. She currently is a professor in UB’s chemical and biological engineering and electrical engineering departments. Takeuchi said she was “thrilled” to have met the president: “I thanked him profusely for the award and for his support of science and science education.” — Donald Feldstein |
