2009 Spring Delegate Assembly; Newsletters, Web sites earn kudos

Eight UUP chapters and the union’s Committee on Active Retired Membership earned high marks for their newsletters and Web sites in the ninth annual Journalism Contest sponsored by the union’s Communications Department.

“I commend our active and retiree members who volunteer as writers and designers of union newsletters and Web sites,” UUP President Phillip Smith said. “They should all be proud of the work they do to spread the message that UUP is the union that makes SUNY work.”

Awards were handed out during the 2009 Spring DA as follows:

Cobleskill Unity—Honorable Mention, General Excellence, Editor: Joanna Sanchez.

Cortland Cause—Best in Class, General Excellence, Editor: Karla Alwes; Best in Class, Best Art or Photo, Photographer: Brian Tappen of Upstate Medical; Award of Merit, Best Feature Story, Writer: Karla Alwes; and Award of Merit, Best Editorial or Column, Writer: Lawrence Ashley.

Farmingdale Unifier—Honorable Mention, Best Editorial or Column, Writer: Michael Smiles.

Oneonta Sentinel—Award of Merit, General Excellence, Editor: Jill Attanasio.

Oswego In Touch—Award of Merit, General Excellence, Editor: Donald Masterson.   

Stony Brook Insight—Award of Merit, General Excellence, Editor: Pamela Wolfskill; and Award of Merit, Best Web Site, Webmaster: Wolfskill.   

Stony Brook HSC—Best in Class, Best Web Site, Webmaster: Bruce Kube.

Upstate Medical University—Award of Merit, Best Web Site, Webmaster: Colin Massulik.

UUP Retirees—Best in Class, Best Feature Story, Writer: Malcolm Nelson of Fredonia; and Best in Class: Best Editorial or Column, Writer: Judith Wishnia of Stony Brook.

The contest is judged by professional writers, editors and graphic artists.
