Who says it ain’t easy being green?
UUP’s monthly membership magazine, The Voice, has been environmentally friendly for a good part of the last two decades, ever since Earth-conscious union members first recommended goin’ green in a 1994 readership survey. Since that time, UUP has worked hard to ensure that the environment is not harmed before, during or after the printing process.
The Voice is printed on recycled and biodegradable paper that is whitened without the use of chlorine or bleach and is printed using soy-based inks. All overrun copies of The Voice are later recycled—and the process begins again.
The magazine is printed by Benchemark Printing Inc. in Schenectady, a company certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which means the company complies with the highest social and environ- mental standards on the market.
In addition, FSC principles and standards prohibit the conversion of forests and the use of hazardous materials, and they require that companies respect international worker and human rights.
“We are quite conscientious about a company’s environmental practices,” said UUP President Phillip Smith. “Our members demanded it, and we’ve delivered.”
