UUP member Carl Wiezalis holds the honor of becoming the first active SUNY faculty member to serve on the SUNY Board of Trustees.

Wiezalis assumed his seat during the Nov. 27 board meeting in his capacity as president of the University Faculty Senate. A measure signed into law in 2006 — to add the SUNY Faculty Senate president to the board as a nonvoting member — took effect July 1, 2007.

Wiezalis said he’s delighted to join the board as the faculty representative.

“I will do all that I can to ensure the voice of the faculty is heard and I look forward to working with all my colleagues on the board as we advance teaching, learning, research and public service across the SUNY system,” Wiezalis said.

“Carl Wiezalis is a tireless advocate for SUNY, an expert in his chosen field, and a person of strong character and integrity,” said SUNY Interim Chancellor John Clark.

“Carl has been a strong voice within UUP, and I have no doubt he will be a strong advocate for the needs of faculty as a member of the SUNY board,” said UUP Acting President Frederick Floss.

Wiezalis is a UUP delegate from Upstate Medical University, where he’s been a faculty member for 38 years. He’s beginning his second two-year term as president of the SUNY Faculty Senate. Wiezalis also serves as a member of the New York State Public Higher Education Conference Board.
