UUP President William Scheuerman used this book on the labor movement in major league baseball during a labor history symposium at NYSUT headquarters in May.
Scheuerman moderated a panel using major league baseball’s labor relations history to illustrate why people form unions.
The day-long symposium — sponsored by the American Labor Studies Center (ALSC) in cooperation with the New York State Labor History Association and a wide variety of other organizations — was designed to give elementary and secondary school teachers the resources and materials they need to incorporate labor history into the K-12 classroom. More information is available on the ALSC Web site at www.labor-studies.org.
Scheuerman serves as ALSC treasurer.
Other workshops included an in-depth look at resources and activities on child labor and actions students can take to address the issue; using the arts and music to teach labor history; and chronicling the Kate Mullany story as a case study for using local history to teach students about the efforts of workers to organize.
