Preliminary results: UUP retirees vote for NYSUT Retiree Council

UUP’s retiree members approved a constitution to create a NYSUT Retiree Council for NYSUT Election Districts 40, 41 and 42.

Preliminary results of the July election —787 in favor and 21 opposed — show overwhelming support for adopting a constitution to create the council.

As The Voice went to press, the election results had not been certified.

Should the results stand, UUP retirees will be entitled to elect three representatives from each of the election districts, for a total of nine. Council members can fully participate in NYSUT retiree meetings, conventions, and other activities and programs.

“This is a NYSUT Retiree Council and does not impact the status of retirees within UUP,” stressed statewide Membership Development Officer Edward Quinn. “So what does this mean to UUP retirees? It means they will be able to provide a strong voice for higher education retirees within NYSUT.”
