Organizations

  • Education International International, non-governmental organization comprised of international faculty unions world-wide. Useful for research reports and advocacy statements and programs. EI’s work on General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS), which regulates trade in educational services is particularly important for our work.
  • Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). International organization located in Paris that is a primary resource on economic policy in advanced capitalist economies.
    OECD’s Directorate for Education is an important source for statistics and reports on international education policy.
  • UNESCO. The main portal to UNESCO’s program on higher education.
  • Joint ILO/UNESCO Committee of Experts on the Application of the Recommendations Concerning Teaching Personnel (CEART). The main page for the joint International Labor Organization (ILO) and UNESCO committee that oversees the implementation of the 1997 Recommendations Concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel. The Committee meets every three years and publishes reports on the rights and status of higher education organizations and personnel issues.
  • Boston College Center for International Higher Education. An important academic center for the study of globalization and higher education.
  • Globalization and Higher Education Research Center (GHERC).A useful forum for issues concerning the university, democracy, social justice and labor. Their stated mission: “The mission of the Globalization and Higher Education Research Center (GHERC) is to advance knowledge about globalization and higher education. The Center envisions postsecondary educational institutions as key sites for determining and negotiating various global forces shaping societies today, including the growing influence of a world market. An important concern of the Center is the degree to which colleges and universities might foster truly democratic societies committed to global social justice and a more peaceful global co-existence.”
  • University World News.A relatively new organization of higher education journalists in various countries that publishes a digest of news articles on global higher education.
