Dear Colleagues: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

September 20 marks the beginning of an entire week of global\nclimate action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For about a year now, youth around the world have led the\nway by walking out of class and demanding accountability from our elected\nofficials. Now, they\u2019re calling on people of all ages to join them in the\nstreets through various actions including, but not limited to rallies, marches,\nand workshops on September 20th as part of a Global Climate Strike. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s no denying the climate crisis is already here. Over\nthe years, we\u2019ve watched storms, floods, fires and heat waves devastate\ncommunities from Puerto Rico to Portland. Within the last four years, five\ncatastrophic Category 5 hurricanes have happened, with one occurring as\nrecently as last week. In the meantime, our political system has proven\nincapable of providing legitimate solutions to this crisis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We know what the solutions are, and we have the means to\nimplement them. UUP is working on legislative proposals that will help protect\nour climate, our students, and our future. All that\u2019s left is for us to work\ntogether to build political power and create the changes science and our\nprinciples demand. UUP has joined the Climate Strikes Coalition and partners\nfrom around the world to activate thousands of people around the country who\nwant real solutions to the climate crisis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are calling on UUP members to provide support for planned\nstudent-led climate actions; join an already planned action; spread the word;\nand\/or coordinate with student environmental groups and student government\nassociations to develop joint-actions for the week of September 20. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hundreds of Climate Strike events are being planned across\nthe country. Attached you will find a list of some of those events, a social\nmedia kit, and an outline of how to get involved and take action. In the\noutline, you will find links to graphics and posters for the week of action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our communities, our planet, our students, and our future\ndepend on a climate movement that reaches all corners of this country. To\nchange everything, it takes everyone \u2014 and with your help we can build a\nsustainable world for generations to come. Please join us on a conference call\non Friday, September 13 or Monday, September 16 to share ideas, discuss your\nchapter\u2019s plans to take action, and to ask questions or obtain assistance with\nyour plan. The call-in information will be shared later this week. If you have\nquestions or need assistance before the call, please do not hesitate to contact\nAmy Sheldon, asheldon@uupmail.org<\/a>.\nAmy can also assist with developing fliers to get members involved in any\nactions you plan on participating in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
