{"id":1661,"date":"2024-05-08T16:38:27","date_gmt":"2024-05-08T16:38:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uuphost.org\/purchase\/?p=1661"},"modified":"2024-05-08T16:38:28","modified_gmt":"2024-05-08T16:38:28","slug":"downstate-public-higher-ed-themes-at-nysut-ra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uuphost.org\/purchase\/downstate-public-higher-ed-themes-at-nysut-ra\/","title":{"rendered":"Downstate, public higher ed themes at NYSUT RA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uupinfo.org\/images\/uupdate\/24\/240506.jpg\" alt=\"uupdate 05-06-24\" title=\"Downstate, public higher ed themes at NYSUT RA\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By Kate Morano, special to UUP<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UUP\u2019s fight to keep SUNY Downstate University Hospital open was a recurring them at the 2024 NYSUT Representative Assembly, where NYSUT delegates pledged their continued support in the fight to save the hospital and several high-profile speakers reiterated their commitment to protecting public higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs successful as our campaign was to save Downstate from closure, Chancellor King is not backing down on his transformation plan\u201d said UUP President Fred Kowal at the UUP Breakfast Saturday morning. \u201cNYSUT has been invaluable in this fight. With them, we never felt like we were alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 1,700 NYSUT delegates attended the RA, held May 3-4 at the New York Hilton in Manhattan. They voted unanimously for a UUP-backed resolution that called on Gov. Kathy Hochul to reverse SUNY\u2019s plan to close the state-operated teaching hospital, and to sign legislation which would help modernize and revitalize the facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AFT President Randi Weingarten, NYSUT President Melinda Person, state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli\u2014who received the Friend of UUP award at the 2024 Spring Delegate Assembly in April\u2014and Brooklyn Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon all referenced the fight for Downstate hospital in their speeches<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gov. Hochul, who spoke on the first day of the event, mentioned Kowal\u2019s name in her five-minute speech. Notably, she said nothing about SUNY Downstate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">KUBE, UUP MEMBERS HONORED<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>UUP statewide Vice President for Professionals Carolyn Kube was honored as NYSUT\u2019s Healthcare Professionals Member of the Year, a well-deserved honor for her years of union service and her work as a medical technologist at Stony Brook HSC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s special work. It\u2019s very gratifying,\u201d Kube said in a NYSUT-produced video about her work. \u201cYou\u2019re giving a person a second chance at life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kube is a dedicated unionist who served as Stony Brook HSC Chapter President and as a member of UUP\u2019s statewide Executive Board before being elected as statewide VPP in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Click&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mmU5fAYh4QM\">HERE<\/a>&nbsp;to view the NYSUT video, which spotlights Kube\u2019s work at Stony Brook HSC and in UUP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UUP statewide Secretary-Treasurer Jeri O\u2019Bryan-Losee also received a shoutout for her work with student loan forgiveness. Weingarten, who spoke at the event\u2019s first day, praised O\u2019Bryan-Losee\u2019s work, which has led to over $12 million in student loan forgiveness for UUP members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her speech, Weingarten spotlighted the work of unions like UUP and NYSUT and emphasized the fight ahead as the 2024 election season draws closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAmericans don\u2019t want culture wars, they don\u2019t want book bans&#8230;They want students to have the freedom to learn and teachers to have the freedom to teach,\u201d Weingarten said. \u201cThe tool of the autocrat, of the millionaire, is not just power, it\u2019s apathy. Public education, freedom, democracy, it\u2019s all on the line in 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NYSUT also awarded its Albert Shanker Award for Distinguished Service to state Sen. Robert Jackson, a longtime UUP ally and public higher education advocate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor me, advocacy is very important,\u201d said Jackson, who once walked over 150 miles from Manhattan to Albany in support of public education funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PROTECTING PUBLIC HIGHER ED<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>At the RA, NYSUT and state leaders emphasized the importance of educators to shaping the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTeachers are the most important people in New York,\u201d said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who spoke on the second day of the event. \u201cYou\u2019re the backbone of the middle class.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DiNapoli expressed a similar sentiment, calling educators \u201cthe lifeblood of our neighborhoods from Long Island to New York City to Upstate New York.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWell-funded, quality public education can transform the lives of students and their families,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her speech, Person advocated for increased funding for public higher education and called on lawmakers to level out taxation rates in New York, which has one of the highest levels of income inequity in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDemocracy is built on the unwavering commitment of its citizens,\u201d Person said. \u201cWe need to start having a fair taxation system in this state so that we can give communities the kind of public education they deserve. Union work isn\u2019t just about jobs or dues, it\u2019s also about community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UUP RESOLUTION GETS SUPPORT<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the major priorities of UUP at the RA was a UUP-sponsored resolution to support efforts to teach students about union work.
