The Downstate Medical Center Chapter of UUP represents 3,000 faculty and professional
\nemployees at SUNY\u2019s academic medical center in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n
Downstate Medical Center (also known as Brooklyn Health Science Center) is one of
\nthree academic medical centers in New York and the sole academic medical center in Brooklyn.
\nDownstate is Brooklyn\u2019s fourth-largest employer and contributes more than $1.3 billion yearly to
\nthe state\u2019s economy. Every dollar invested in Downstate returns $12 to the local economy.
\nThe medical center provides care for thousands of New Yorkers each year, many of them
\nunderinsured or uninsured and many more who are aged or very sick and require the specialized
\ntreatment that only Downstate offers.<\/p>\n
More New York City physicians have trained at Downstate than at any other medical
\nschool; one in every three doctors in Brooklyn graduated from Downstate. More than half of
\nBrooklyn\u2019s doctors in certain specialties have been trained at the center.<\/p>\n
Downstate is considered the birthplace of magnetic resonance imaging; the first human
\nMRI studies were performed at Downstate. A Downstate scientist, Dr. Robert F. Furchgott, won
\nthe Nobel Prize in 1998 for identifying the fundamental role that nitric oxide (NO) plays in the
\nregulation of cardiovascular function.<\/p>\n
Downstate\u2019s Division of Transplantation has performed more than 4,000 life-saving
\nkidney transplants since 1965 through its Downstate Transplant Program. Program doctors
\nperformed the first-ever dual kidney transplant in 1996. The program is one of the largest and
\nmost active of its kind in New York.<\/p>\n
The medical center houses the state-designated Regional Perinatal Center, a new, 29-bed
\nstate-of-the-art unit that provides Level 3 care 24 hours a day. More than 850 neonates are cared
\nfor annually in the center.<\/p>\n
Other specialty services offered at Downstate include cardiothoracic surgery, high-risk
\nmaternity care, and 75 community outreach programs\u2014including the Center for Community
\nHealth Promotion and Wellness.<\/p>\n
