{"id":886,"date":"2015-03-24T09:35:36","date_gmt":"2015-03-24T13:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uuphost.org\/cobleskill\/?p=886"},"modified":"2015-03-24T09:35:36","modified_gmt":"2015-03-24T13:35:36","slug":"new-leaders-learn-to-lead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uuphost.org\/cobleskill\/?p=886","title":{"rendered":"New leaders learn to lead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/uupinfo.org\/images\/frontpageslider\/15\/NewLeaders1.jpg\" alt=\"uupdate 3-23-15\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>UUP has taken its battle to defend SUNY to the airwaves and the hallways of the state Capitol, and the union\u2019s effort hasn\u2019t gone unnoticed by legislators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLawmakers are seeing us fighting for SUNY,\u201d UUP President Fred Kowal said. \u201cWe need to make sure lawmakers know they are not alone in rejecting the governor\u2019s ill-conceived proposals that undermine public employees. The political winds are changing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kowal\u2019s statements were part of his March 20 opening address at the union\u2019s annual Chapter Presidents and Vice Presidents Retreat and New Union\/Labor Activists Workshops, held March 20-22 in Cooperstown. More than 75 new and veteran leaders attended the weekend conference.<\/p>\n<p>The union\u2019s ad campaign\u2014including a television ad featuring SUNY students\u2014has been very effective, Kowal said. The hard-hitting ad\u2014which claims Gov. Cuomo\u2019s Executive Budget is wrong for students, SUNY and New York\u2014aired in March across the state and in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>A companion print ad ran in The Daily News, the Albany Times Union, Newsday and the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, as well as weekly papers statewide.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/uupinfo.org\/images\/frontpageslider\/15\/NewLeaders2.jpg\" alt=\"uupdate 3-23-15\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kowal and several of the union\u2019s statewide officers and leaders briefed the attendees on UUP\u2019s recent activities and activism at the opening session. That set the tone for the seminar and helped prepare new leaders for their weekend\u2019s worth of work.<\/p>\n<p>New leaders learned the ins and outs of union activism at the conference. They attended workshops that ranged from strategic planning and member mobilization to the Taylor Law and social media. The sessions were conducted by UUP staff and NYSUT labor relations specialists assigned to UUP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have dealt with the issue of civility in the workplace,\u201d said new leader Theresa Dember-Neal of SUNY Farmingdale. \u201cI wanted to see what I could do to improve situations for others where I work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to be proactive on my campus, so I came to find out about how things work,\u201d said Chris Sweeney of SUNY Canton.<\/p>\n<p>The workshops focused on problem solving, member mobilization, strategic planning, workplace civility, the Taylor Law, digital photography and social media.
