Applications are now available for the AFT\u2019s Robert G. Porter Scholars Program,
\nwhich offers four, four-year $8,000 scholarships to high school seniors who show
\noutstanding service to their community and an understanding of the role unions can
\nplay to create a more just society. Applicants must be dependents of AFT members.<\/p>\n
The program also awards 10 grants of $1,000 each to AFT members to assist in their
\ncontinuing education.<\/p>\n
Since its inception in 1993, the Robert G. Porter Scholars Program has awarded
\nmore than $550,000 to AFT members and their dependents to further their
\neducation and to help achieve the goals of AFT – affiliated unions, such as UUP. The
\nscholarship program honors the late AFT secretary – treasurer, who served from
\n1963 to 1991.<\/p>\n
Porter was a union activist who dedicated his life to championing the rights of
\nworking people, promoting civil rights and ensuring that the union was a vehicle to
\nachieve justice.<\/p>\n
The application deadline for students and members is March 31, 2016 (Midnight).
\nThird party responses for high school student applications are due by
\nApril 15,2016.<\/p>\n
