UPP strongly condemns the unjust and ongoing detention of UB medical researcher Shogvi Huseynov by ICE and CBP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On January 7, 2026, Dr. Huseynov was detained after mistakenly making a wrong turn at the Peace Bridge\u2014a common occurrence in Buffalo\u2019s border city\u2014and immediately attempting to reenter the U.S. from the Canadian checkpoint. Despite holding a valid visa that authorizes him to live and work in the United States, ICE has confined him for over a week at the Batavia detention center, signaling possible deportation and providing no timeline for his release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We demand the immediate release of our colleague and an end to the harm caused by DHS\u2019s erratic and punitive actions in our communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
