{"id":4805,"date":"2022-06-23T11:39:47","date_gmt":"2022-06-23T15:39:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uuphost.org\/buffalo\/?p=4805"},"modified":"2022-06-23T11:39:47","modified_gmt":"2022-06-23T15:39:47","slug":"important-state-legislative-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uuphost.org\/buffalo\/2022\/06\/23\/important-state-legislative-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Important State Legislative Update"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dear Colleagues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am happy to report a major legislative win that was spearheaded by your union, UUP, at the end of the legislative session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UUP\u2019s advocacy has led to the passage in the State Senate and State Assembly of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2021\/s8389\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">S8389C<\/a>&nbsp;&amp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nyassembly.gov\/leg\/?default_fld=%0D%0At&amp;leg_video=&amp;bn=A9523B&amp;term=2021&amp;Summary=Y&amp;Memo=Y&amp;Text=Y\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A9523B<\/a>. This legislation will be an incredible benefit for our contingent and adjunct members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This bill is an amendment to state labor law, giving full-time employment status to public employees who work at least 30 hours per week for the limited purpose of accessing the federal Public Student Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill also applies a 3.35x multiplier to contingent faculty\u2019s in-class hours so that hours worked outside of class are more accurately reflected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, it will ensure that agencies and employers can transmit requisite paperwork on behalf of workers to the federal government which will help more New Yorkers get their loans forgiven faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is more advocacy work to be done to push Governor Hochul to sign this bill.
