As an academic or professional staff employee, full-time or part-time, tenure-track or\u00a0contingent, you automatically receive contractual\u00a0benefits\u00a0won by our negotiations team and supported by our members. But UUP membership is not automatic, and until you join, you will be receiving valuable benefits paid for by other members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Member-Only Benefits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Once you become a UUP member, you’ll receive additional benefits outside of the contract,\u00a0including\u00a0carrying dental, vision, and life\u00a0insurance into retirement, as well as discounted rates for other insurances, retail, Internet & mobile service providers, travel and more.\u00a0Importantly, only members are entitled to the support of our Labor Relations lawyer when needed, and only members have a role in the democratic governance of the union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By contributing about 1% of your salary in dues (about $20\u2013$30 per paycheck on average for full-timers, or about $34 per semester for an adjunct teaching one course) members provide the support needed to hold a strong position at the contract negotiations table, and to sustain a robust Benefits Trust Fund, which pays out potentially thousands of dollars in dental & vision care, scholarships and discounted services to individual members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to those benefits administered by the UUP Benefit Trust Fund<\/a> available to all, UUP members are entitled to others provided through UUP Members Services Trust<\/a>, and by our affiliates, NYSUT, NEA and AFT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
