Department Representatives

The UUP’s Binghamton Chapter is looking to expand its Department Representatives (Reps). As we prepare for contract negotiations, we must have an active and engaged Department Rep System to communicate essential information to and from our union members. It’s a simple way to take an active role in supporting your Union. Please consider becoming a Representative for your department.

Department Reps serve as the “face” of UUP to members they represent and are the Chapter’s “heart and soul.” Some other responsibilities include:

  • Become better informed on contractional obligations
  •  Improve your working conditions by alerting UUP Chapter Officers of concerns regarding contract violations or other problems in your department.
  • Facilitate two-way communication between members and chapter leaders.
  • Attend Department Rep and General membership meetings to raise concerns, request information, and bring information back to your leaders.
  • Have conversations with non-members about becoming union members and encourage members to become active in UUP.
  • Help to ensure UUP signage on campus in every building/department.

To become a Department Rep., complete the Department Rep Contact Information Form

UUP Salary Compression Intake Form

Dear UUP members,

I encourage you to use the UUP Intake Form at the link below to provide us with information or voice any questions or concerns you have about the 2020 salary compression adjustments called for in the 2016-22 NYS-UUP Contract. These adjustments constitute the second of four years of compression adjustments required by the contract. This intake form is not to be used in lieu of contacting campus Human Resources with questions you may have about your specific circumstances. We are encouraging members who have such questions to contact HR. However, even if you speak to HR about your specific case, it is also important for UUP to know what members’ questions and concerns are.

We are asking interested members to complete this form and return it to us by April 1, 2021.

Information collected through this process will be viewed at the chapter and state levels of UUP. We will use it to address concerns that need immediate attention. We also will use this information to inform the next round of discussions with the State over possible refinements or adjustments to the 2021 salary compression analysis. Modifications to the process and methodology adopted in the second round were a direct result of the information members provided after the first round of salary compression adjustments.

I encourage you to communicate with us through this intake form as soon as possible. We will begin analyzing all information as it comes in.

Please contact your UUP chapter office if you need immediate assistance.

Petition in support of our contingent colleagues

UUP, Binghamton Chapter Update

Dear Colleagues,

As you know, many of our contingent colleagues have been working along side us for years, demonstrating their commitment to the success of this institution and its mission. They have provided expertise and labor, and are a key part of the excellence that makes Binghamton a “Premier Public University”.

However, the current fiscal challenges have left many of them vulnerable to departmental budget cuts. Some of our long-time colleagues, many who have dedicated years to this institution, are at risk of losing their appointments and/or health insurance in the middle of a global pandemic and economic crisis — a time when both are critical to their security and wellbeing and that of their families. This is unacceptable.

In addition, the faculty and professional staff who remain may be expected to cover the courses or other professional obligations that are now unassigned, without compensation or an equivalent reduction in other professional obligations.  This would also be unacceptable.

There are alternatives to consider before eliminating positions, before threatening the health and wellbeing of our colleagues, and before diminishing the quality of the education our students will receive. Together with UUP chapters across the SUNY system, the Binghamton chapter urges our administration to take a strong stance in support of our contingent colleagues.
I also encourage each of you to click on the link below, read the petition, and to add your name to show you stand in solidarity with our contingent colleagues!

Course Development Agreements/Intellectual Property – SPECIAL BULLETIN

Please see UUP’s new Special Bulletin on faculty courses and intellectual property concerns at the link below – and share it with colleagues.

https://uupinfo.org/reports/reportpdf/IntellectualPropertyBulletin.pdf

In the context of online course expansion some faculty are being presented with course development agreements that give their campus intellectual property ownership of their courses/course materials.  Faculty lose their intellectual property rights only if they sign a written waiver surrendering ownership of their work. Individuals should know the full implications of what they are asked to sign and whether there are possibilities for alternatives that do not relinquish their ownership rights.

Sincerely,
