September 20 Climate Strike & Week of Action

Communication from UUP President Fred Kowal

September 20 marks the beginning of an entire week of global climate action.

For about a year now, youth around the world have led the way by walking out of class and demanding accountability from our elected officials. Now, they’re calling on people of all ages to join them in the streets through various actions including — but not limited to — rallies, marches, and workshops on September 20th as part of a Global Climate Strike.

There’s no denying the climate crisis is already here. Over the years, we’ve watched storms, floods, fires and heat waves devastate communities from Puerto Rico to Portland. Within the last four years, five catastrophic Category 5 hurricanes have happened, with one occurring as recently as last week. In the meantime, our political system has proven incapable of providing legitimate solutions to this crisis.

We know what the solutions are, and we have the means to implement them. UUP is working on legislative proposals that will help protect our climate, our students, and our future. All that’s left is for us to work together to build political power and create the changes science and our principles demand. UUP has joined the Climate Strikes Coalition and partners from around the world to activate thousands of people around the country who want real solutions to the climate crisis.

We are calling on UUP members to provide support for planned student-led climate actions; join an already planned action; spread the word; and/or coordinate with student environmental groups and student government associations to develop joint-actions for the week of September 20.

Our communities, our planet, our students, and our future depend on a climate movement that reaches all corners of this country. To change everything, it takes everyone — and with your help we can build a sustainable world for generations to come.

Join us, spread the word, and pledge to take action on September 20th and beyond.
