Dear Colleagues,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the 11th hour\u2026of the 11th day\u2026of the 11th month\u2026the fighting of World War I ended in 1918. Due to the conclusion of \u201cthe War to end all Wars,\u201d November 11th became a universally recognized day of celebration. The day was originally declared \u201cArmistice Day\u201d 8 years after the end of World War I and honored only Veterans of that war. Then in 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, it was renamed \u201cVeterans\u2019 Day\u201d to honor ALL<\/u><\/strong> Veterans who served America in war and defended democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Veterans Day, the Buffalo Center Chapter of the United University Professions honors all our Veterans who unselfishly place their lives on the line for our freedom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many Veterans, our nation was important enough to endure long separations from their families, miss the births of their children, freeze in sub-zero temperatures, bake in wild jungles, lose limbs, and, far too often, lose their lives. Military families have had to endure career interruptions, frequent changes of address, and a disproportionate share of parental responsibilities. Military children often deal with changes in schools, separation from friends and, hardest of all, the uncertainty of whether Mom or Dad will live through their next combat tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while not all Veterans see war, all who served in the military have expressed a willingness to fight if called to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veterans have given us freedom, security, and the greatest nation on earth. It is impossible to put a price on that. We must remember our Veterans. We must appreciate our Veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All members of the UUP Buffalo Center Chapter are encouraged to attend the Veterans Day Celebration here at the university on Thursday, November 11th<\/sup> at 11:00 a.m. in the Buffalo Room located in Capen Hall.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
