UUP Covid Survey Summation

Overwhelming majority believes mask wearing, testing,contact tracing, cleaning/sanitizing, hand washing, clean air flow, and working remotely are important. (see charts 1a and 1b)

  • More than 80% believe EACH of the following is important in reducing personal risk (and more than 3 out of 4 responded “VERY important” for those in bold italics):
    • Mask wearing of both students and employees
    • Cleaning/sanitizing of workspaces
    • Cleaning/sanitizing of bathrooms
    • Clean air flow
    • Access to hand washing facilities for the campus community
    • Access to hand sanitizer for the campus community
    • Contact Tracing
    • Themselves and others working remotely
    • COVID-19 testing of employees and students
    • Use of protective barriers around work areas
    • Staggered/rotated schedules
    • Temperature taking of students and employees

Majority concerned about NOT being allowed to work remotely, workload increase related to COVID-19, being unable to perform job adequately more than 6 feet from others, loss of work/income opportunities because of campus cost cutting, campus administrators refraining from sharing negative/worrisome information, and one or more stakeholder groups not being included in decision-making.  (see charts 2a and 2b)

  • 71% are more than a little concerned about NOT being allowed to work remotely, and 36%of Professionals and 52% of Academics are VERY concerned
  • 73% are more than a little concerned about campus administrators refraining from sharing information because it is negative or worrisome, and 26%of Professionals and 53% of Academics are VERY concerned
  • one or more stakeholder groups not being included in decision-making, and 22%of Professionals and 50% of Academics are VERY concerned
  • being unable to perform job adequately more than 6 feet from others, and 20%of Professionals and 46% of Academics are VERY concerned
  • workload increase related to COVID-19, and 21%of Professionals and 35% of Academics are VERY concerned

Many have concerns that the campus will fail to provide what is needed to decrease risk of COVID-19 transmission; and less than half believe that the campus willbe able to sufficiently enforce safety policies and protocol. (see charts 3a and 3b)

  • 77% believe the campus will:
    • Provide sufficient hand washing/sanitizing access.
  • Roughly just two-thirds believe the campus will:
    • Provide adequate levels of personal protective equipment
    • Support return to remote work should it be deemed necessary by healthcare experts
    • Provide adequate cleaning and disinfection of campus bathrooms and workspaces
  • 70% of Professionals and 51% of Academics believe the campus will:
    • Ensure sufficient isolation of COVID-19 positive cases
  • Only 64% of Professionals and 47% of Academics believe the campus will:
    • Provide sufficient clean air flow
  • Only 62% of Professionals and 42% of Academics believe the campus will:
    • Provide adequate contact tracing
  • Roughly two-thirds of Professionals and just one-third of Academics believe the campus will:
    • Be able to sufficiently enforce COVID-19 safety policies and protocol.

Less than half believe campus administrators are allowing participatory decision-making with all stakeholder groups; less than half believe campus administratorswill equitably distribute work related to reopening and COVID-19; and less than half believe the campus has a plan to support a surge in demand for campus-based healthcare facilities. (see charts 4a and 4b)

  • Roughly 1 in 3 Professionals and almost half of Academicsdo not know whether the campus has a plan to support a surge in demand for campus-based healthcare facilities to accommodate students who may become ill.
  • Among Professionals 30% disagree and 15% do not know, and among Academics 49% disagree and 11% do not know whether campus administrators are allowing participatory decision-making with all stakeholder groups.
  • 62% of Professionals and just 37% of Academics agree campus administrators will equitably distribute work related to reopening and COVID-19.
  • Only 1 in 3 Academics and half of Professionals believe the campus will be supportive of employees with childcare conflicts as a result of COVID-19 school and childcare closures.
  • Roughly one-third of Professionals and 40% of Academics do not believe campus administrators respect people’s varied comfort levels with reopening.
